Event: Landslide
Location: Peru Departmento de Carabaya Puno region

Number of Deads: 7 person(s)

Situation:

Seven people have died as a result of the torrential rains this weekend in the southeastern Peruvian region of Puno. Five people died late Friday in a collapse in Carabaya, an area where numerous informal mining settlements are located. The place where the disaster occurred is located 20 hours by road from the provincial capital and can only be reached on foot, making rescue operations and communications difficult. Two other people died when the Balcon de Oro River, also located in Carabaya, overflowed its banks. Police in Puno plan to use a helicopter to recover the bodies of the dead and transport the injured to a hospital. Two prosecutors, a justice of the peace and several police officers were sent to the scene of the disaster to determine what happened.
