On 2010-03-31 at 05:07:24 [UTC]

Event: Tornado
Location: USA State of North Carolina Western area

Situation:

More than 600 structures were damaged by Sunday's tornado, according to High Point City Manager Strib Boynton. Boynton said city workers took a detailed talley Tuesday of homes and businesses that sustained damage. This latest number is significantly higher than Monday's original damage estimate of more than 100 structures. There are between 24 and 26 families in High Point who are displaced, according to Boynton. Reality is starting to set in for people who have lost their homes. Scott Tilley and Tim Betenbaugh have been friends for more than 25 years and live in the same apartment complex. They said all tenants of their complex have been asked to leave within the next few days and the landlord is offering other apartments to which tenants can move, but the two men aren't interested in that location. Both of their apartments were damaged and Betenbaugh's SUV was destroyed by the tornado. "It's a lot of stress on you because you never anticipate going through anything like this, but you just have to look around, try to find a new place and in the meantime make sure we have a shelter over your head," said Tilley. Tilley and Betenbaugh have been staying at the American Red Cross emergency shelter since the tornado hit. "They've been awesome to us. It shows me there are good people out there that are willing to help," said Betenbaugh. The two men are thankful to have understanding employers who are giving them time to get back on their feet. Their next step is moving everything out of their apartments into a moving truck, then setting out to find a new place to call home. "You can replace material things but you can't replace life," said Tilley.
