Description:

A raccoon found in the vicinity of Railroad Avenue and Alpine Street has tested positive for rabies. The raccoon was the fifth rabid animal reported in Middlesex County this year and the first rabid animal reported in South Amboy, according to a press release from the Middlesex County Public Health Department. Last Friday, the press release said, the South Amboy animal-control officer responded to a report that a raccoon which appeared sick and aggressive had attacked a resident's dog. The raccoon was euthanized and sent to the state Department of Health laboratory for tests, which can back positive for rabies. Authorities said the resident's dog was not up to date with its rabies vaccination at the time of the incident.
