Description:

A measles outbreak has spread to Wellington. Already up to 50 people in Northland are suspected of the disease in that region's biggest outbreak in at least 20 years. Northland medical officer of health Dr Jonathan Jarman says measles has been established in a small, isolated, Pakeha community in the Hokianga, but won't specify where and possibly another in Wellington after a family with measles visited people in the capital. He says it is one of the most infectious of diseases and health officials in both Northland and Wellington are doing what they can to limit the spread of the infection. Jarman says if caught early, there is a chance people exposed to measles can be vaccinated against it.
