Description:

Flooding in Peru has killed at least eight people after torrential rains caused rivers to overflow their banks, say police officials. Heavy rains in the Cusco region caused the incident on Monday. An unnamed government official said there were 20 people missing. Rescue workers have done their best to reach those trapped in the ensuing mudslide. The official added that 70 percent of the homes in the village of Cochahuasi in the district of Taray have been destroyed. Late January, rampaging rivers in the Cusco region washed away the railroad that transports tourists to Machu Picchu. The ancient site, which is Peru's main tourist attraction, is located 500 km (310 miles) southeast of the capital, Lima.
