Thirteen children have been hospitalised following a measles outbreak in Mkhankatho and surrounding villages in Libode, the Eastern Cape health department said today (March 18). “Of those admitted eight are toddlers and five teenagers. Only three of them were from Mkhankatho village,” spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said in a statement. A team of health workers had since been sent to villages in the area to vaccinate 700 children and 5000 villagers after it was detected yesterday. He said the virus was airborne and most villagers had not been vaccinated. The first measles outbreak in the Eastern Cape was discovered in January in the Mqanduli area near Mthatha.
