Situation Update No. 2 On 2010-03-05 at 15:34:53 [UTC] Event: Vehicle Accident Location: USA State of Arizona Interstate 10 Phoenix Number of Deads: 6 person(s) Number of Injured: 15 person(s) Situation: The Department of Public Safety has confirmed that six people were killed and 15 others were hurt in an early morning wreck involving a tour bus on westbound Interstate 10 at milepost 174 near the Gila River Bridge. That's just past State Route 587, south of Ahwatukee. According to DPS it happened just before 5:30 Friday morning. Aerial video showed emergency crews breaking out windows, trying to remove victims from the mangled bus. Medics have set up a triage area on the freeway to treat the injured. A total of five medical helicopters were called out to the scene. Two 11-year-old children, a boy and a girl, reportedly were among the injured. Both of them are expected to recover. While it's not clear exactly what led up to the wreck, DPS said the driver of the bus lost control after apparently rear-ending another passenger vehicle. The bus, which was carrying a total of 21 people, swerved and then rolled over. Some people reportedly were thrown from the bus when it rolled. DPS was advising drivers to avoid the area for at least the next four to six hours. Westbound traffic was being diverted at Casa Blanca Road. That detour will take traffic north to connect with Loop 202 and 101. Drivers will be able to take Riggs Road or Queen Creek Road back to I-10. The eastbound lanes are open near the wreck scene, but traffic is moving very slowly. Information will be updated as they become available. | | | | |
