Description:

A total of 46 people escaped death yesterday when an Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) jet they were travelling in crash landed at Mwanza airport yesterday morning, company officials have confirmed. The ATCL's Boeing 737-247(A) 5H-MVZ, swerved off the runway, skidded for about a kilometre after touching the runaway tarmac at the airport at around 7:45am, the airport's deputy manager, Mr Ibantao Muchunguzi, said at the scene of the accident. Fire fighters managed to evacuated from the plane all 39 passengers and seven crew members. With the mishap, the airport was closed o big airplanes, except small aircrafts, because of one wing of the ATCL's plane, partially blocks the runway. Mr Muchunguzi said the cause of the accident could not be immediately established, but eyewitnesses said something was wrong with the front wheels of the plane. "We heard a loud bang before we saw the plane swerving off the runway," the fire brigade commander in the Lake Zone, Mr Juma Kuiyamba, said. The spokesperson of the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA), Mr Abel Ngapemba, said over the phone from Dar es Salaam yesterday that he was informed that the Precisionair Boeing aircraft had to cancel its flight to Mwanza yesterday following the accident. Taifa Stars players were scheduled to fly to Mwanza aboard the cancelled Precisionair plane for their friendly match against Uganda's national team, The Cranes, at CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza City.
