Description:

Two people are confirmed dead after two small airplanes apparently collided in midair south of Williston late Saturday morning. The collision occurred in the air above a rural area about three miles south of Williston off County Road 322 at about 11:51 a.m. Saturday, according to Levy County Sheriff’s Capt. Evan Sullivan, who said he could not release the names of those killed until next of kin had been notified. There were no survivors, Sullivan said. Sullivan added that wreckage of one of the aircraft was so badly burned that he could not yet confirm whether or not there may have been more than just a pilot aboard. The planes crashed about 300 yards away from each other, and the second aircraft’s fuselage was partly intact on the ground, Sullivan said The second plane appeared to be an experimental-type aircraft, he said. Sullivan said he expected investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration to arrive at the scene Saturday night. Sullivan said the initial hope is that radar from Gainesville Regional Airport might show what pattern the planes were flying in and at what altitude when they collided. Sullivan said he was not aware of any witnesses to the collision, and that a woman who lived in the area of the crash apparently heard an explosion, approached the wreckage of one of the aircraft, noticed a body inside and called authorities. The area in which the planes crashed is east of U.S. 41, in a rural area off 212th Court. The wreckage of the plane that Sullivan said looked to be an experimental aircraft was scattered across a pasture behind a house that apparently was unoccupied at the time of the collision. About 300 yards away, the severely charred wreckage of the second plane sat in an oak hammock.
