2010-03-06 07:23:34 - Hailstorm - Australia EDIS CODE: HS-20100306-25219-AUS Date & Time: 2010-03-06 07:23:34 [UTC] Area: Australia, State of Victoria, , Melbourne Damage level: Moderate (Level 2) Not confirmed information! Description: Police have issued a rare call for people to stay away from the city tonight after a huge storm wreaked havoc across the city, with hail the size of tennis balls. Victoria Police spokeswoman Sharon D’Arcy said there was heavy flooding around the city and more rain was on the way. She urged people to stay home. “We’d much prefer people stay away tonight," she said. Ms Darcy also urged people to reconsider plans to attend tonight’s NAB Cup game at Etihad, saying the closure of Southern Cross Station made it very difficult to get to the game. The freak autumn storm struck about 2pm. The weather bureau reported tennis-ball sized hail at Ferntree Gully. Roads were blanketed in ice so thick it looked like snow. Cars were forced to a halt in the city centre, with some abandoned.
