2010-03-06 07:31:12 - Landslide - USA EDIS CODE: LS-20100306-25220-USA Date & Time: 2010-03-06 07:31:12 [UTC] Area: USA, State of California, La Canada Flintridge, Damage level: Heavy (Level 3) Not confirmed information! Description: At least 43 homes and dozens of vehicles were damaged or destroyed by mudslides Saturday as another winter rainstorm sent mud and debris cascading down hillsides that had been stripped by last year's wildfires. No injuries were immediately reported, but several hundred homes in La Canada Flintridge were under evacuation orders as heavy rains overflowed debris basins, overwhelmed cement barricades and swept cars into the streets and storm drains. A mudslide on Oceanview Blvd. in La Canada Flintridge caused severe damage to at least seven homes. Several dozen cars were also destroyed by flowing mud. According to residents in the area, the slide began at around 4 a.m. when debris basins overflowed and spilled out into the residential area in the mountains north of Glendale and La Canada Flintridge. Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich confirmed the numbers of homes under mandatory evacuation in a multi-agency news conference, where he also announced 12 of the damaged homes had major damage or had been completely destroyed. 25 vehicles were also damaged. Antonovich said he went through the storm-ravaged areas Saturday morning. "It was as if you were at Universal Studios on the studio tour seeing a devastated war zone area," he said. No fatalities or injuries have been reported.
