Description:

Dynamite stored in an apartment block in the south Yemen town of Taiz exploded today, bringing down the building and killing at least 12 people, a medical official said. Many more people were wounded, said the medic, contacted by telephone from Sanaa. "Twelve people were killed and others were wounded," said the medic, who added that the dynamite, which was stored on the first floor of the building, exploded around 5.00am (1.43pm AEDT). The explosion caused the collapse of the building, which also housed six flats. Yemen, the poorest country in the Arab world, is facing economic and political crises, including over 30 percent unemployment, an ongoing fight against Al-Qaeda militants and frequent separatist demonstrations in the south.
